Finding Motivation

Life can be hard sometimes and it can be a struggle to find the motivation to do anything. Whether it's getting your work done or tidying your room. You probably end up procrastinating a lot and say "Oh I'll do it later" or "I can do that tomorrow". Try and get out of the habit of procrastinating important tasks and get it done right now.

Now I know that's easier said than done but I'm making post to give you some tips on finding motivation to do your work and get things done.

Here are my tips for finding motivation

What's the goal?

Think about the end result of the task. If it's an assignment for university or homework for school, think about how good it will feel when it's over and done with. You'd be able to relax and not have that looming deadline over you and just think about how much free time you'll have once it's done. If the task if tidying your room or even doing a spring clean of the house then think about the end result when it's done. How good it'll feel once it's done and everything is all tidy. It will be a very satisfying feeling. So my advice is just think about the end result and how good it'll feel once it's done then just try to do it. Hopefully you'll be able to find the motivation to get it done.

Get organised

When I was in university and had assignments to do, I could not work in messy surroundings. I worked a whole lot better when my bedroom was tidy and my desk was organised. I don't know what it was but I'd be on my laptop and if my bed wasn't made or my desk had clutter on it or there was stuff on the floor then it would just be on my mind and I wouldn't be able to focus on my work. However, when I organised my bedroom and just tidied up then I found I worked a whole lot better when my surroundings were just organised. I don't mean do a whole spring clean of the room but just make your bed, tidy your desk up and put things away in drawers or your wardrobe. Just get rid of any useless clutter laying around then you may find you work a whole lot better when your surroundings are organised.

To Do Lists

Countless times I've recommended this tip but honestly it's a good piece of advice. Make to do lists. They really do help. They don't have to be huge long lists with twenty things on them. They can have three or five things on them. Don't go above and beyond and try to get everything done in one day. Get yourself a weekly planner and mark down which days you're going to which task. Say if you have a few assignments to do then spread the workload out over the week. It'll make it seem so much less stressful and you can focus on particular tasks for each day. Also it is a great feeling when you cross off the last thing on your to do list and you'll feel like you've earned some free time. So make a to do list right now for today and see if you get motivated.

Get off your phone

Your phone is probably your biggest distraction. Sometimes it hits me how much I have my phone in my hand. It's not good. You can waste hours of the day by just being on your phone. Whether it's endless scrolling through social media or messaging friends or watching YouTube. You probably spend a lot of time on your phone. Well it's time to get off your phone. Turn it off or put it on silent and put it away where you can't see it. Whether it's in your bag or drawer just make sure it's nowhere near you. When you're off your phone, it'll be so much easier to focus on the work you need to do because you won't be distracted by a new tweet or a message. Give it a try. Turn your phone off and hide it away for an hour and focus on your work. You may find yourself motivated to do it.

Go Outside

If you're struggling to find motivation inside your own home then maybe it's time to go outside. Take your work to the library or a coffee place. You may find you'll work better in different surroundings. Maybe just you need to get some fresh air and go for a walk. Clear your head for a bit because you may be stressed or overthinking about the work you need to do so just get out of the house for a while. Even if it's for half an hour or an hour. Maybe fresh air is all you need to get some motivation back to get some work done.

Try It For An Hour

Sometimes the best way to find motivation to do your work is to actually make a start of your work. Just stop everything you're doing and just make a start of your work. If it's an assignment you need to work on then sit at your desk and go over the assignment. Read it. Make notes. Do a bit of research. Just make a start and try it for an hour. You may find that after working for one hour, you don't want to stop and could work for another. Unless of course you work for an hour and don't do much then maybe you should try some of my other tips and see if that helps you find the motivation. You can do it. Just try to find the right way to find the right way to get motivation for you.

Take a break

Sometimes people think it's easier to just knuckle down and work flat out with no breaks. Well you may think that helps but it doesn't. There's a reason you need to take breaks because you need to refresh your mind and just have a breather. Whether it's a ten minute or half an hour break just make the most of it. Step away from your work and do something else. Have some lunch or watch a YouTube video or an episode of a TV show. Just don't get yourself too distracted because remember you need to be able to come back to your work afterwards. Maybe set yourself a timer. Work for two hours then have a fifteen break then come back and work for another two hours. You may find you can work for two hours knowing you're going to give yourself a break where you can just chill for a bit before getting back into work.

Reward Yourself

Sometimes the best way to do your work is to give yourself a reward for doing it. You can tell yourself if I do three hours of work today then I can go hang out with my friends or I can go shopping or I can cook myself a nice meal or play my favourite video game.

Ask for Help

If you're really struggling with the work you're doing. Maybe you need some help. Talk to someone. Whether it's your parents, a friend, a colleague or a teacher. Talk to them. Tell them that you're struggling. Don't feel like you're a failure if you need help because it shows you're strong. You realise you're struggling and the solution is to talk to someone to help you. I know it may seem scary to ask for help but the moment you do, everything will be okay. Back in university when I was in first year, I was terrified to ask for help so I bottled it up a lot of the time and it stressed me out. By the time I got to third year, I realised it's okay to ask the lecturers for help and for them to check your progress. They are their to help and support you. It made me feel so much better when I asked for help or showed them my work because they gave me suggestions on how to improve. Their advice then helped me with my work and made me make more progress. So it's not such a bad thing to ask for help. It can benefit you so much, all you need to is ask.

Plan for Tomorrow

I must point out that we all get bad days where we are just so unmotivated to do anything on a particular day. I know I mentioned try not to procrastinate and this tip is technically procrastinating. My advice is to make a plan to do it tomorrow. Plan out day. Wake up early and plan out where you're going to do your work. Are you going to do it at your desk? Bedroom? Library? Coffee shop? You may find yourself getting excited to be doing your work. You can make doing your work exciting. Prepare your bag for it with books, pens and anything else you may need  more. Maybe even pack yourself some snacks to have while you do your work. Just try not to stress yourself out too much over it. Just remember you can always do your work tomorrow as it's another day. Just try and prepare for it. Just do the best you can and that's all that matters.

Anyway, that's all my tips on finding motivation. I hope they were helpful to you. Let me know if you have any tips on how to get motivated that I may not have mentioned in the comments below.

I'll be back again soon with another post.

See you then.
