Long Flight Preparation

I feel like a flight that is longer than three hours can sometimes feel like a drag and in that time you want to keep yourself occupied while in a confined space. As someone who has just been to Cyprus which was a four hour flight, I figured out a few things that really helped me out.

1. Have a meal in the departure lounge
This one is good if you don’t fancy buying the overpriced food on the plane, although in the airport a lot of things are more expensive than normal. I like to make sure I’m well fed before a flight so that I don’t have to worry too much about buying the plane food which can be quite expensive. Although it still doesn’t stop me from buying some mini cheddars on the plane.

2. Portable charger is a life saver
Having a portable charger is a life saver because it means you don’t have to wander around the airport looking for a plug. On my plane they had usb ports which was very handy but I still had my portable charger for the airport which really helped me out.

3. Download a few movies or shows before you go
One thing I really enjoyed doing to pass the time was watch a movie on the plane. I actually watched Harry Potter on the way and it just passed the time as well as entertained me on the way there. It’s good having a few downloaded on your phone as it could be a long flight you could at least get through one movie or maybe even two.

4. Bring a little phone tripod with you
This may be very random especially if you’re not a vlogger but having a little tripod means you can plop your phone on the tray table and you don’t need to worry about holding your phone the whole time. You may look a little weird to other passengers but honestly who cares because you can watch your movie without fear of getting a cramp in your hand. Honestly I was so grateful to bring my little tripod with me.

5. The aisle seat is the best seat
Honestly, I know it’s fun to look out the window but honestly the best seat is the aisle seat because it means you can easily go to the toilet without fear of telling anyone to move out your way. Plus you can order your food and drinks first. Plus you have the aisle next to you which gives you a bit more legroom than you would if you’re squished in the middle. If you can I would recommend the aisle seat as it’s the best seat on the plane.

6. Chewing gum or boiled sweets
Probably the worst thing about flying is the dreaded ear popping that happens when the plane takes off and lands. Someone once told me that chewing gum helps but for me it didn’t help. I know the trick is to swallow and they’ll eventually pop. My mum suggested sucking on a boiled sweet will help so I had some on the flight back and in my opinion worked much better. My ears were fine and there was a little pop but not so bad that I couldn’t hear anything.

7. Don’t stand up as soon as the plane lands
I will never understand people that as soon as the plane lands and the seat belt sign goes off, everyone rushes to get their stuff. They haven’t even put the walk away on the doors yet. Where are you even going? I understand if you want to gather all your stuff together but also you don’t need to head straight for the door and block the aisle cause then you’re just blocking people from getting their stuff. To be fair as soon as the plane lands it does feel like a race to get to baggage claim but still. There’s no need to rush.

8. Relax on your flight
Honestly, flying can be quite overwhelming to some people but try to remember that it’s a very small chance something bad will happen. Have a little drink, treat yourself to some snacks. I always like a cheeky coke and mini cheddar on my flight. I know it’s something I can easily get on the ground but there’s just something about having it on the plane. Read a book or watch a movie or take a few moments to get a bit of shut eye. Before you know it, you’ll soon be arriving at your destination so just relax and make the most of being in the air.

Anyway those are my tips for preparing for a long flight. Let me know if you have any other tips to get you through a long flight or just any flight really. I’d love to hear your tips.

Thank you for reading my blog and I’ll be back soon with another post.

See you then.
