How To Beat Creative Block
Sometimes we have days where we're not inspired to do anything or motivated. It can be harder when you're trying to be creative and no ideas are coming to mind. I've struggled with a creative block in the past especially when it comes to blogging because you do have days where you have no idea what to post. I thought I'd share some tips on how to get out of the creative block and hopefully this will help you to get creative ideas on days when you're feeling uninspired. Let's get started.
1. Go Outside
This one is pretty straightforward but sometimes inspiration can come from actually living. Getting out of the house can cause you to be inspired by anything and everything. Did you visit a nice cafe today? Why not leave a review? Eavesdropped on a conversation? Make a story out of it.Pretend like you're going on a retreat and your main goal is to get a list of ideas. Sometimes ideas can come from the most unlikely of places so sometimes getting out of the house can be inspiring.
2. Go on Pinterest/read magazines/other blogs
Why not check out Pinterest for ideas? It's full of suggestions for posts. Sometimes scrolling through your home feed is full of ideas. Sometimes you can see a post and incorporate it in your own way. For obvious reasons don't copy posts word for word because then you're not being original. Share your own experiences. Of course there's going to be similar posts like what's in my bags and morning routines but at the end of the day that is still original because every bag is different and everyone has a different morning routine. Same with looking at magazines. Sometimes you see an article in a magazine that you could interpret in your own way. Let's say the magazine article was about spicing up your relationship but what if you're a single person then why not spice up your single life. It's not copying the idea, it's interpreting it to make it your own. Sharing your own experiences. Same reading other blogs, I'm not saying look at blogs to copy what they're doing but sometimes an idea can spark just from a few words. Take a moment to get inspired by viewing other people's works but not copying them. You'd be surprised how many ideas you can be inspired by.
3. Just write
Honestly, just have a creative dump. Write every and all ideas. Even if it's silly or you have no idea how you're going to do it. Just write every idea and thought. Sometimes an idea can come from nowhere. It's like hidden away and sometimes you have to have a brainstorm to find it out. It's amazing how it works. Another tip is to just write something, even if you don't know where exactly you're going with the writing but sometimes that can really help you create other ideas. Sometimes the best ideas come from initial ideas. It's like you're working on a novel and you think you're writing about a cute love story then as you're writing it, you're thinking there's not enough excitement and drama so what if a plot twist comes along to impact the relationship and suddenly you have a more interesting plot. It happened to me when working on my novel. I thought I knew my story but then a plot twist came to mind and it got me really excited about it. Yet the plot twist only came as I was writing away. It just hit me and suddenly a load of other ideas fell into the mix. Nobody wakes up with tons of ideas. Sometimes working on one idea can spark up even more ideas. You just have to keep going.
4. Take pictures
Take pictures of everything. Whether it's sharing your day in life or maybe you did something exciting that day and want to capture it. If you have a blog, people want to know about your experiences. Plus having photos makes it all the more interesting because it gives people a visual of what you're doing. Taking pictures is similar to writing everything down. Sometimes ideas can come from taking pictures. I've planned my posts by taking pictures. I've woken up and thought I'm going to share my morning routine. If I'm going on a trip, I will take photos of what I did and then that creates a whole post idea. Taking pictures can really inspire you as you have something to talk about and something to share with the world.
5. Take regular breaks
It's always good to take regular breaks when you're working on creative ideas. Sometimes we can be so caught up in our creativity that we forget to take a break and then cause us to burnout. This can cause us to resent our creative work and may even cause you to stop working on it. Taking a breather from your work is really important because it allows you to have a breather. Make yourself a drink, step outside and breather in the fresh air for a few minutes. It's like refreshing your eyes so that after your break you can go back to your work with a fresh set of eyes. You may even figure out an idea you hadn't thought of before. Breaks are really important. They don't have to be long breaks but always remember to take a break.
6. Try a different angle
Sometimes you have to try a different angle. What I mean by this is basically going in the opposite direction to what you're doing. Maybe you're writing a novel about a good guy but you don't know where to take this story. Why not switch it up and focus on the bad guy's perspective. What's their motivation? Why are they the way they are? Did something happen between the villain and hero that caused the events of the story? Approaching things at a different angle can make you see things you didn't see before. It can inspire you to create things you didn't think of initially but suddenly have a bunch of ideas you can go with from this different perspective. If you have an idea, why not think about what the opposite of that idea is. Instead of writing about why you love something, why not write about what you hate about it. This is a way I really enjoy getting creative because you're basically taking your idea and flipping it on its head to see what's underneath. If you're stuck for ideas, try looking at everything at a different angle because you may be surprised at what you find.
There we have it, that's all the methods I use to beat a creative block. Let me know if you have any other suggestions as creative blocks are inevitable but it's how we get past them is what really counts.
Thank you for taking the time to view my blog and I'll be back tomorrow with another post.
See you then.
