My Writing Tips

As I'm currently working on a novel, I thought I'd share some tips which I've learned as a beginner writer which will hopefully help any of you with writing. Even though I'm not a professional and this currently just a project for me to work on in my free time. I hope you enjoy these five writing tips I have to share.

1. Make a note of all the ideas you have for the story

This can be useful when you're writing. Some times ideas come out of nowhere but you're currently that far in your story to write them or are in the middle of a chapter. Just make a note of it then when the time is write in your story then you can refer back to it. I have a little notebook which I write my ideas down when I'm out and about just so I don't lose the idea. Whether I use the idea is another matter plus at least I've made a note of it so I'm not struggling for ideas when it comes to getting writer's block. Which has happened a few times when I've been writing.

2. Use my write club

Something I've discovered on Instagram (highly recommend following some writers on Instagram) is My Write Club. It's a website where you can put up your writing goal and see your progress. For my first draft I'm planning on reaching 75,000 and made a deadline for next year. It has a little graph of your progress and it kind of motivates me to keep writing. I can also see how many words I need to get up to by certain months and it's satisfying to see the graph going up. Would recommend checking it out if you're writing a novel.

3. There will be many drafts

As much as everyone wishes the first draft was the perfect final story. It probably won't be. Also in the first draft you're allowed to make mistakes in punctuation and spelling. It doesn't have to be perfect writing either. It's only the first draft and when you come back to edit it to create your second draft that's where you can make improvements. So don't stress too much about the first draft as there will always be second, third and fourth drafts. It'll be okay.

4. Just keep writing

No matter what happens. Just keep writing. Even if it's the final chapter of your story or a particular scene you want in your story. Just write it. The beauty of writing your own story is you don't have to do it in chronological order. You can decide the order of chapters you want to write so if you're not feeling writing the first few chapters then work on a middle chapter or the final chapter. Just keep writing and don't worry too much if it makes sense. Like I said before there's always other drafts.

5. It's your story

At the end of the day it's your story so you can make it however you want it. There's a reason you thought of your story and nobody can take it away from you. You can make the characters your own. I'm already in love with my two main characters and I'm excited with how their story is going. Also make sure you're enjoy writing. Sometimes I remember how difficult it was for me to write a 2000 word university essay and now a thousand words seems so much easier when it's my own story. So make sure you enjoy writing your novel and it'll be so much easier for you to write.

Anyway, I hope these tips were helpful to any of you writers out there. Let me know if you have any writing tips in the comments below and maybe we can help each other out.

I'll be back again soon with another blog post.

See you then.
