August Reads

In August, I did quite a bit of reading. I've been slacking with my reading and fallen behind on my Goodreads reading challenge which is twenty five books. This month I decided to read again as the first book I read made me realise how much I love reading and got me back in the reading game. I just love how a book can transport you to a different world and let you escape real life. I'm not going to lie, I read a lot of good books this month and I thought I'd share them with you now.

With Love From The Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa
This book is a duology which is at Days At The Morisaki Bookshop and More Days At The Morisaki Bookshop. I picked this book up a while ago when I was browsing Waterstones for a new book and this one caught my eye. It’s such a pretty cover that I had to get it. I’d also heard of this book from somewhere and I thought why not. It follows the life of Takako who finds herself moving into her Uncle Satoru’s bookshop after a heartbreak. It sees the two bond and Takako develops a love of reading. It follows the unlikely pair bond and learn from one another. It’s such a cosy, feel good book that I just couldn’t put it down. You grow to love the characters and it will just make you smile. It will also make you sad but honestly a book full of emotions is a good book to read. I’d highly recommend it and I’m so glad it was the first book I read this month. It also helped me start reading more books this month.

Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
A classic book which I’ve read only twice previously. I recently bought this book earlier this year as I didn’t actually own a copy myself and again I really loved the cover. I love these old style hardback books and I feel like more books should be like them. I feel like they are timeless. As many of you know this book follows Alice after she falls down the rabbit hole and meets several unusual, slightly mad characters who all have their own unique charm like the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and even the Queen of Hearts. It’s a classic tale which I always enjoy reading and I feel like everyone should read at least once in their lives.

Don’t Let Him In by Lisa Jewell
I’ve only ever read one Lisa Jewell book and that was Watching You. I thoroughly enjoyed it as it had many plot twists and I couldn’t quite predict where the story was going to go. Similar to this story, I wasn’t quite sure where it was going to go. Yet I got invested, I ended up reading 100 pages of this book in one train journey. I couldn’t put it down as I just had to know what happened next. It follows the life of several women who all have something in common. A man. Little do they know this man has several different names and his history is a little murky. It tells us three different perspectives: the two women and the man himself. It takes us to the past but also the present. Yet it all makes a lot of sense. I was worried I’d get confused with the different perspectives as well as the back and forth time periods but it actually made sense. Highly recommend the audiobook as it gives you three different voices for each of the character’s perspectives. What’s more interesting is the women’s perspective is told in third person whereas the man is told in first person. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and honestly couldn’t put it down. It’s definitely made me want to read more of Lisa Jewell’s books as this one was another great one I read.

Before The Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
This book is four short stories in one. It’s about this coffee shop where if you sit in a certain seat then you can go back in time. The only catch is the time limit is the temperature of the coffee. You have to do what you need to do in the past before the coffee gets cold hence the name of the book. If you let it get cold then you’ll be stuck as a ghost in the cafe. It’s an interesting copy and I thought it was going to be a quick read until I realised how long the chapters were. There are only four chapters in this book but each is filled with a different set of characters, all with the same goal of going back in time to go back to the past. Even though it doesn’t change anything in the present, it offers a different perspective to a past memory. Yet interestingly enough each thing they want to see in the past, happened in the cafe they are in. I haven't actually finished this one yet I'm halfway through the third story but I'm enjoying it so far. It's a cosy, interesting read and I can't wait to see where it goes.

There we have it, those are all the books I read this month. It definitely inspired me to read more and now I only have 8 books left to read on my bookshelf which is an achievement in itself. Won't stop me buying more books though. Let me know what you've read this summer, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and I'll be back again soon with another post.

See you then.
