October Favourites
Happy Halloween!
It's Halloween which means it's the last day of October and so it's time to share everything I've been loving this month. Let's get started.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story
Yes, I watched it. I was having a long debate about whether to watch this or not as it’s not my usual cup of tea. I’m not a big fan of horror stuff, yet I watch true crime documentaries and videos to learn more about different cases. I’d never actually heard of this case until it was released. I watched a video and read about it before I went into it just to know what I was letting myself in for. Of course the algorithm online started recommending posts on the series and people saying that it’s good or it’s bad. I knew then that I had to see it for myself. Of course going into dramatised shows of cases it’s never going to be fully accurate. We’ll never fully know what happened in the Gein household and of course there’s a lot of speculation about some of the crimes he did commit. Of course another aspect is whether something is really happening or if it’s just in his mind. Remember that when you’re watching it. I thought I was going to watch the first episode and be like nah this isn’t for me but I kept watching. There is an accurate quote which really sums up people who watch shows like this or true crime or horror in episode two which says “You’re the one who can’t look away.” Which is true because of course I went onto episode two then the next episode and the next. It’s one of those shows you want to know what happens. It’s intriguing especially this one to see the mindset of him and why he did what he did. He was a very disturbed individual who had a troubling life and mindset. It’s scary how being isolated can really turn a person into essentially a monster. It’s not always the case but there’s a small possibility. I will say this show is definitely not for everyone as it’s gruesome and I also recommend not eating while watching this show cause it will put you off. What was intriguing was to see how Ed Gein inspired the well known horror movies we know today and I do like that it switches timelines. Charlie Hunnam did an excellent job portraying him as I really felt the emotion but also the disturbing nature of the individual. I was intrigued by this show overall and felt I learnt a lot more about this case. Yet as with most shows like this, I know not everything is real and some things may be fictionalised or dramatised for effect. Plus we can’t fully know what exactly happened in that house. Either way it was a show I was glad I watched but probably won’t watch again. Only watch if you want to watch it but I know it’s a show not for everyone.
Raven
I was browsing iPlayer for something to watch and I came across the CBBC category. I decided to have a nose to see if there were shows that I used to watch, that’s where I stumbled across Raven. There were two series on there and I decided to watch it. Honestly, this show was like our Squid Game growing up. I genuinely thought those kids died during the Way of the Warrior. It brought back a lot of memories of watching it. I even remember episodes where I’d actually see a warrior complete the way of the warrior. Although I looked up and apparently it was only completed four times which shows how challenging it was. I don’t think even an adult could do it. Either way I started watching it this month and it was a comfort show. Definitely one of my favourites growing up as someone who used to watch CBBC everyday after school.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone book
The one that started it all. An entire series which many of us grew up with either reading the books or watching the movies. It was a memorable moment in history and the impact this entire series had on the world. Yet it would not be possible without the first book. I always enjoy a moment of reading the first book because it's something that always brings some level of comfort. It brings me back to when I first read it and I have a lot of memories of it. Even now I still have the same images going through my head of how I imagine certain scenes to play out. It's a comfort read and it's always a good time of year to read it because it has themes of starting school, Halloween and then you have Christmas. It's just a great time of year to start reading the series. I'm not sure I'm going to keep reading the series after this one but I may do as it would feel slightly wrong if I didn't. We shall see though. This has definitely been a favourite this month and reminded me why I love this series.
The Pumpkin Spice Cafe
I actually started reading this book a few days ago and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Has definitely given Autumnal themes with the Pumpkin Spice but so far I've loved it. I do love these stories where the main character decides to leave their everyday life and start over at something completely different. It makes me wish I could do something like that and maybe one day I will. Who knows. I'm still reading this book and haven't finished it yet but so far I've enjoyed it and can't wait to see what happens.
There we have it, those are all the things I've been loving in October. Let me know something you've enjoyed this month, I would love to hear it.
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and I'll be back tomorrow with the first post of November.
See you then.
