What Not To Do In The Cinema

The other night, me and my mum went to see the new Christmas film Last Christmas. I loved it. I thought it was great Christmas movie and the story line was amazing. It was a touching story. There was a few funny moments and I thought Emilia Clarke did brilliantly.

Now this got me thinking about things people do in the cinema that can drive me crazy. I thought I'd share a list of what not to do in the cinema. Some of these may be obvious but I thought I'd share my thoughts in the hopes that we can have the best time in the cinema and also make sure everyone else does too.

1. Sitting in front of someone

Now I know sometimes this can't be helped because some cinemas assign seats. However, if it is quiet in the cinema. My advice is try not to sit in front of someone. Especially if the seats are not raised enough. It's finding your seat then having some late comer or a big group of people choose to sit in the seat in front of you. It makes you kind of embarrassed because you feel you may offend them if you get up and move to a different seat but at the same time you don't want your view of the screen to be obscured and have to sit awkwardly in order to see the screen. Just be aware of people sitting behind you and try not to sit in front of someone.

2. Using your phone during the movie

I know some people try and be sneaky by hiding their phone in their bag so they can check the time or a text. However, you can't be sneaky in a cinema. It's usually dark when the movie is playing and the only light is from the screen. So when someone decides to use their phone, everyone will notice. My advice is just disconnect from the outside world. You're in a cinema with other people who all want to enjoy the movie. Not be distracted by someone else's phone screen. If you really need to check your phone. Go to the bathroom. Don't do it during the movie. Most of the time it's not worth it and you will frustrate a lot of people. So don't be that person.

3. Talking during the movie

I am guilty of whispering something during the movie. I've done it with my mum. However, I make sure I am whispering and only my mum can hear me. Plus it's a very short whisper. Not even a full conversation. That's fine. What's not fine is just chit chatting away at a volume where people can hear you. If you really want to chat. Sit at the back or on the side or in a corner somewhere so you're not distracting anybody. There is a time and place to talk and it is not during a movie in the cinema. The point of going to the cinema is to escape into a movie for a few hours. Not get frustrated because people are distracting you by talking during the movie. It's not fun. So please if you're going to the cinema, try to save all your conversations before or after the movie.

I'm just going to say being distracted by other people in the cinema when you're trying to watch a movie is a really frustrating thing.

4. Loud popcorn eating and slurping during the movie

Now I'm not the quietest of eaters but during the cinema I do have a lot of respect for people and try to keep my popcorn eating quiet. Which is difficult as popcorn is one of the loudest foods to chew but where would be without our popcorn in the cinema. Usually I try and finish my popcorn during the adverts because nobody cares about being distracted in the adverts. Sometimes I get lucky and have some popcorn left when the movie starts. Now I just silently munch it or suck on it until it dissolves into a sugary mess and I can just swallow it. However, I do know when not to eat popcorn loudly and that is during the serious moments or plot developing moments. There's nothing worse when you're engrossed in a moment in a movie then all of a sudden somebody loudly starts eating popcorn and you're taken out of the magic in order to glare at that person eating popcorn loudly or rather glare in the direction of where the loud popcorn eating is coming from. So yeah, just be aware of how loud you eat your popcorn and slurp on your drinks. Otherwise you may have some people silently glaring and judging you which isn't a great feeling.

I think some people forget is that everyone pays money to go see a movie. We've all be to a cinema to watch our favourite movies. We all know what it's like. I just think some people need to be respectful of others and try not to ruin the experience of everyone else who can appreciate the art of cinema. So if you like to sit in front of people, talk, use your phone or eat popcorn really loudly in movies then don't go the cinema or next time you go to the cinema don't do any of those things during the movie.

That's all I have to really say about it. These are things I have experienced during the cinema. Let me know anything I may have missed about what not to do in the cinema.

I'll be back tomorrow with another Blogmas post.

See you then.
